Stalwart Saskatchewan 1 Cat......3 People.....

Stalwart on Highway 2 north was once a community with close to 350 residents. Like most small towns it had a Esso, townhall and places to eat. Once 3 proud Elevators stood there and in 1961 or so the Federal Elevator burnt to the ground. Lucky for Stalwart this elevator was replaced and is the only one left standing in town. I was bought by the pool and then sold to a farmer. The tracks have long been gone but she stands watch over town. The only life on this day was a Cat keeping his watchfull eye on the now quite and overgrown sidewalks........Enjoy......Mike

My Great Uncle, Wilbur Marion Hubbard, died in a hunting accident near here in 1909 at age 19. He was one of eight children and the only son of George W. and Martha A. Hubbard. A few Hubbard families (the GW Hubbard family was one of a few) settled in this region from the United States (Kansas/Oklahoma) around the first decade of the 1900s. They homesteaded in the region. My grandmother, "Lucile" Ruth Hubbard kept journals of her young life, including her time in region, namely Stalwart and Saskatoon, before returning to the United States to Portland, Oregon, and ultimately, Seattle, Washington. I would be interested in conversing with anybody familiar with the history of this area, especially if they have knowledge about the Hubbards, some of which may still live in the region. - John McLane, Seattle WA

Hello all. My mother was born in Stalwart August 26,1917. Her name was Vera Gertrude Magaw, daughter of George Samson Magaw. I believe my grandmother's maiden name was Reid. My grandfather owned a farm equipment business but lost it due to the depression in 1931. My grandmother died in the flu epidemic of 1918, leaving three children and my grandfather. The family moved to Groundbirch, B.C. and homesteaded there. My mother married my father,Frederick James Walsh April 13,1935. I was born April 2,1936. Any info?

My name is Terri McGraw, formerly Tracey Walters. I have very fond memories of our summer visits to Stalwart. My aunt and uncle lived in the house pretty much directly across the road from the grainery. Their names were Everett (Evy) and Phylis Anderson. I remember going to Roney‘s to get water from their pump, visiting Annie McNabb at the corner store, a very tall man named Gus that I believe lived at the curling rink and playing with Marion and Darcy Roney. I have often wondered if the town was still standing and if the Roney decendants were still in the area. I am totally tickled pink to have found this site and hope to return to visit Stalwart in the next year or 2.

I am a member of the Stalwart Community Hall Board - we host lots of events and most recently we have begun hosting Dessert Nights with seasonal fruits and homemade desserts. Our community is small but vibrant and what the photos do not show are the houses with young families and children playing in their yards. I would like to invited everyone that is interested to take part in our Centennial Celebration on the afternoon of Saturday, July 9, 2011. We are going to serve our famous homemade desserts, a historical slideshow, horseshoe tournament, petting zoo, live musical entertainment and face painting.

Hi all, my name is Greg Blatchford and I too lived in Stalwart, from Aug 1964 to July 1965. My Mom was the school teacher there but the school was closing. We lived in a house that was to the back and right of the school. Alan123, I remember you and your family (your Mom and Dad were friends of my Mom). If I remember correctly, you have an older brother. You were closer in age to my kid brother, Michael. I have to say I'm happy I found this. I grew up in Stalwart from when I was born (1980) until I graduated high school (1998). The house in 4394 was the house I lived in until the summer of 1990. We were the last ones to live there. We moved from there into another house that you don't have pictured. I miss living there some days. Thank you so much for these pics.

I was born in Stalwart (Imperial, actually) and lived in Stalwart from 1959 to 1965. My dad Mike Ladyka ran the post office/general store. About the elevator that burned down described at the top of this page, I vaguely remember driving home from Etter's Beach one evening and seeing an elevator burning down. Since I was born in 1959, and still remember seeing the fire, I'm wondering if that fire (assuming it is the same elevator fire) must have happened after 1961, perhaps 1963-64-65? Also, I'd be interested in information on the 100 year celebration in 2011.

Guest Hello there. I just purchased a unique photo album on ebay of Stalwart from the early part of the 20th century. It has a lot of photos of the general area a people. It has a picture of the Stalwart school (1912) with the teacher and children posing. There is also a picture of the Indian school with the kids. Also there is a photo of the A.J. Dyck general merchant store. Also, many photos of people and other items of interest.

Hello, I am a member of our Stalwart Hall Board. Our small group is planning a 100 year celebration in 2011. We would appreciate any pictures of the way our town looked when it was booming. We plan to make a map of the business that were on our main street. Don't know how our hall was missing in the pictures, it is 100 years old! We would also appreciate any names and addresses of anyone that would like to attend the celebration.

Jayne, Thanks for the update it is always nice to hear the proper facts from someone from town. I had run into a man that farms in the area and he said that his aunt still owned the house in image 4396 but I never asked were she lived now. He also told me his Dad ran the Esso.....I always try and get it right but sometimes I get the odd bit of wrong information. Thanks again for your input......Mike

Mike, some of your facts are not correct. I live in Stalwart, there is currently 17 adults and 4 children living in Stalwart. The image 4373 was a red and white general store, it was never a esso, that was in a small shop beside this store and is no longer there. Image 4396 has been boarded up for years and is owned by a lady in lives in the USA. and yes our cat population continues to grow. Jayne

The People who make "Pea Buds" are Michelle and Gilbert Nelson. These are Awesome, Healthy snacks made right here in Stalwart with Peas grown right here too!. Search there phone number on SaskTel's website and give them a call. By the way there are now about 50 cats in Stalwart.

Kyrie: Just found your site after googling in Stalwart. My niece and her husband, Leeanne and Joe moved to Stalwart in March 2007 and bought what they said was the old railway station that had been converted into a 5-bedroom farmhouse. There are the two of them, plus their 3 cats, which sounds like they personally doubled the population of both people and felines. I do not know if the old railway station is pictured in any of the above photos. Debbie B. Hope, B.C.

Hello Mike. My family lived in Stalwart for nine months and my father was an elevator agent. The house in 4394 could possibly be the house I lived in. We moved from Stalwart in approx 1952. Dad worked for Wheat Pool. Thank you for capturing a piece of my ancient past. Heather

Interesting! My Grandfather hoemesteaded 1 mile east of stalwart and I was born on the homestead and my folks farmed at Stalwart. There are more than 3 people living there at present. I have relatives living in Stalwart and was just there on a visit. Why the interest in Stalwart.

Kyrie, thanks for your comments. There are only 3 people living in Stalwart that I know of. The lady that lived in the house on image 4396 moved to a seniors home a few years ago and her nephew borded up the house with the contents as she left it. His dad ran the esso station in image 4373................Mike
