Krydor SK The store's are all closed & the streets are silent....

Krydor is on highway 40 between Hafford & Blaine Lake SK. This was once a busy town with many store's and home's. Most have left this town and the shop's that were once open now have been boarded up. The notice on the town well warns one to "Boil Your Water" before drinking!!! I don't think it will be to long before these stores will be in disrepair and broken into. Have a look around these classic structures before they are gone........Mike

Does anyone have any memories of stores owned by Bill and Mollie Grobman and Harry or Mike Polsky. This would have been in the 1920s, 30s and earlier. Also would any of the photographs of the main street stores have been where they were located? Thank you

I have visited Krydor several times and saw the buildings in photographs. My purpose for going there with a friend was to find out who the post master was in 1930 when here mother was born there. Her birth certificate says she was born there and in those days the postmaster signed birth certificates in some cases.

My family owned the hotel from 1963 to 1973 and I had the best days of my life growing up there. I looked after the outdoor rink and pumped out people's sewer tanks and dumped it on Krysaks field. My wife and I make a trip through Krydor whenever in the area and I have such good memories of Krydor and many of the good people there. I recall playing hockey with town kids till 2 o'clock in the morning lots of snow was shoveled by hand then . I wish I was younger and healthier and I would love to buy back our hotel and live where I remember my best days of my life. Thanks Krydor. Ken Cholodnuik

Someone said: "It used to be a busy place." When was that? Probably before WWII or the great depression. This town was in serious decline in the 1960s, now look at it - its a near ghost town. On the plus side, there are no traffic jams to worry about on main street.

I am the niece of Peter & Mary Shyluk (nee Buzik). They owned the Hardware and general store in Krydor for many years. I have such fond memories of visits at their store and home. Whenever we went there, uncle Peter would let my sister Ann & I choose any toy we wanted from his store. I, too, remember the smell of the oiled wooden floors, and the hodgepodge of items crowded into every nook and cranny of the store. I still have the blue slippers Aunt Mary knit for me. She was the eldest of 15 children born to my grandparents Ignacy and Eva Buzik (nee Konchuk). They had a large, luxurious homestead on Redberry Lake. It is still in the family and remains there today in all it's 2-storey majesty with the wrap-around veranda. My father, Paul Buzik, (10th of 15 children) passed away in 1998. He spoke often of his happy boyhood days there

my mum lived in this town and back in about 1948 we went to visit my grandfather and grandmother who had a 2 room house at the end of the street. His name was Wilgan. I remember very little as I was maybe around 5 but I remember only one the one street. Going to read up more about this place.

Just to be picky -- plural formation in English does NOT involve the use of an apostrophe. It's "stores" and "homes," okay? Spelling aside, I love your pictures. My late father, Peter Stanley Kachmarski, was from Krydor originally, b. 1922. His mother's name was Kotelmach. I probably saw at least some of these structures as a boy when my parents made two trips from Ontario in 1959 and 1962 to visit the relatives, of whom there were many since, if I remember correctly, there were eleven and twelve children respectively in their families. My late mother, Stefania Cherneski, b. 1920, was originally from Prudhomme. I remember my father telling me that he played on a baseball team called the Sunshine Millers. The Ukrainian-speaking homesteaders were mostly from Western Ukraine, I believe, and therefore were under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian empire before arriving in Saskatchewan some time prior to World War 1. That is true even of the ethnic Poles, like the Kachmarskis, who were numerous in Western Ukraine in the nineteenth century. Thanks for posting the photos. I'd be interested in attending the centenary in Krydor this year. So if anyone can provide me with the exact date, please do so.

Hi Dawn My grandfather, Joe Marynowski,owned the general store and we would make the trek from Toronto to Saskatchewan every other year to visit my mom's family. Our last visit to Krydor was 1967, the year he died. We helped him auction off his stuff so he could sell the store and (in his late 70s) start a new career selling safes of all things. Just had to make it on his own dime as they all did during this era. I FIND IT REALLY INTERESTING THAT YOU HAVE PICS OF KRYDOR DURING ITS 'GLORY DAYS'. IS THERE ANYWAY YOU COULD POST THEM AS I THINK WE WOULD ALL BE INTERESTED. MANY THANKS

Krydor is slowly improving. The Senior Center is getting a facelift and is looking good. With a full kitchen it's a great place to held a family reunion or other celebration. The old general store has been sold with possibility of becoming an art/music studio. The old post office also has new owners. New people are fixing up a house on 1st. Things are moving! If only something could be done about the house on 1st that is falling down around it's occupant, it's a disgrace for the village. The 100th anniversary is happening in 2013, and a planning meeting is being set. Hopefully there is enough participation from old and new Krydorians to make this a successful event.

I currently live between Krydor and Hafford. It is sad, about the decline of Krydor. It was named for two men, Peter Krysak and Teodor Lucuik. They took three letters from each name. I understand that Krydor was a booming place back in the early days. In 1918, they had an amateur theatrical group. In those days, couples who wanted to get married would go to Krydor, a priest would come to town and perform several ceremonies at the same time. My mother-in-law and father-in-law were married there, but lived closer to Hafford. It seems when villages were getting running water, Krydor town council voted it down. Hafford took the water, and grew, where Krydor began to decline. People had to have their own wells which was a hardship to them and they eventually moved out. Without infrastructure, live is not so much fun.

Water quality is seasonal. Carbon filters and reverse osmosis is cheap these days. For the well you must drill. Sewage is tied into the town system. Low water toilets and even the new compost toilets are great for the environment and affordable now. Gas heat and electric power are at the lot lines! City of Toronto cost to build are $400 a square foot according to cbc radio. $150 were I live, plus the lot. These lots will sell when people see the value. I just hope there is a plan for development. I hate trailers.

We just bought the old general store. It was transformed into an antique store and now we have it as a cottage. It's the town's 100th anniversary this year, I wonder what's in store for this little town. Suppose the first step is an attempt to decrease the nasty pesticides and herbicides going into farmers fields that's polluting the water system. The actual lake just south of Krydor is no longer fishable because of the pollution. In either case, this may one day become our art and music studio. We'll see.

Its time for some Urban renewal! I just bought one of those buildings! Location is great as a Saskatoon bedroom community. Lots of lakes in the area , an affordable building lot with low taxes, sewer, water, natural gas and electricity at hand. Make it ideal for a retirement home or cabin. My friend just paid $168,000 for a lot in the city of Regina! Home Hardware has a bungalow plan for $40K plus foundation. Fill the town with nice Victorian style cottages (not ugly trailers)and the Hotel will have some customers! Local tradesmen are affordable because they want local work!

We have photos from 1978, when my dear Mother-in-law and my husband (Richard Lewanczuk) visited and took photos of Krydor Billards, Krydor Train Station,Krydor Hotel, and of course the ever welcoming landmark of the Prairies,the Krydor Grain Elevator!! I am not sure who has this website as I stumbled upon it however my dad was born in Krydor and my wife and I in 1980 passed through, drove into a ditch in a snowstorm and were helped by a farmer who grew up with my dad and new him well - it was a once in a lifetime experience and always remembered. I remember coming to Krydor in 1979 with my parents to visit my mother's Godmother Helen Michayluk. My mothers maiden name was Jennie Michayluk her father, my Grandfather was Mike Michayluk and her mother was Mary Michayluk. They also had a younger daughter named Alice but Alice died while she was very young in Tillsonburg Ontario. Dick Michayluk was one of my Grandfathers brothers. I remember meeting him when he was traveling through Ontario and stopping in Gobles to visit my Grandparents. Gobles is a small village East of Woodstock Ontario. I was only 11 at the time. I have photo's of Krydor back from 1979 and as I can see the grain elevators are gone, so is the small railway station. Even as I look at the recent pictures here some of the buildings on the main street are now gone. My grandparents moved away from Saskatchenwan back in the thirtys.

My father Peter Shyluk and mother Mary Shyluk lived in Krydor and owned a hardware store for all of their working lives. Upon retirement the store was moved to another location. It is sad to see the decline of our home town. One thing that Krydor did produce was many very good people. The little red brick school housed both elementary and high shool grades initially 2 rooms and later 3 rooms and then in 1958 the high school students were transported to Blaine Lake. Our little Village and the surrounding farms with mainly immigrant families produced many children that attended elementary grades in either one of many rural schools or in Krydor and then did high school grades in Krydor or a select few went to Saskatoon or elsewhere. Many went on to university and other post secondary schooling and then onwards in the working world to become very productive members of society. A past principal In Blaine Lacke High School told me that Krydor area produced more university graduates per capita than any other community in Saskatchewan!

Never a more picturesque village.The right people could make a gold mine here as there are so many options with a sweet layout to the location not often found anymore.Just needs a re-do,.perhaps a Retreat to touch base; with the natural beauty in the area doing all the work.Wanted-1 billionaire with a plan.

We first visited Krydor a couple of years back. Now every time we drive by on the highway, we make a point of dropping in, just want to ensure our eyes weren't deceiving us the first time around. What an eerie town even at mid-day. We've often commented we wouldn't want to be in town at night. It's sad so many small towns have gone the way of Krydor. Hopefully next time we visit it'll be on Krydor Village Market Day and our opinion of your village will be redeemed.

We stopped in last summer and found it very interesting. There was a quaint little general store that smelled of oild floors. They had a market with lots to see, even a donkey giving kids a ride in a cart. A tour of the village was enjoyed by all as we are fanatics about seeing old chuch architecture. The village itself was rather nice. We hope to take some friends there this year.

I find Krydor a beautiful little village and the people very friendly. Sure it has it's problems just like any other community. The village is currently in the progress of doing a village clean up, removing junk from yards and improving the appearance in general. In the winter Krydor is very quiet and the General Store is closed. In the summer it's busier - the store is open, tourists are visiting and sight-seeing, there is more activity with the Krydor Village Market every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, and the people themselves are out and around more. Anyone touring the area won't regret stopping at this quaint village for a visit. Whoever sent in the information putting this town down must have a grudge against someone. Maybe he's one of the people that has to get rid of the junk in his yard for the clean-up. He didn't even know the store was open five days a week during the summer, he thought it was only open two days a week. Also the owner of the store that he mentioned is a well known and highly respected individual, who won the Blaine Lake Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Citizen Award last year.

For those who grew up and had good times in Krydor, too bad you moved away resulting to the emptiness and the eventual disrepair look of the village! Any location will not thrive when the young ones live the nest! I am a city dweller who is tired of the hustle and bustle and have the ability, opportunity and choice to relocate. Laid back is good; flies and orange toilets been there done that! What interests me to know for now is the crime rate of the area, how will the locals take to outsiders coming in, how strict are Blaine Lake's Bylaws enforced in Krydor? Are there ancestral feuds going on that I should know about and avoid? This website is "yeah, grew up there","where is someone?', and rightfully bragging about family ownerships.Two comments were demoralizing. I'm the outsider thinking about coming in. What do you think? Will I succeed, stay where I am or find another place?

We were there this last Sunday and found it quit interesting in that the town does not seem to be alive at all. The state of repair of the buildings off the main street attest to not a care for anything and found it very strange the grass is all cut but the buildings are in such poor shape.

This hamlet is burdened by the 2nd and 3rd generations who don't want outsiders and think their ancestors guarantee some benefit for them. Most of these people are chronic alcoholics and welfare cases. They are so lazy that they prefer the town to waste good resources cutting their grass that they are too lazy to cut themselves, while leaving the streets in terrible shape. Some potholes have been present since 1993. Krydor has some of the worst thieves in the area that are a menace to Krydor and the surrounding villages. This hamlets demise was caused by the descendants of the original settlers. Even the general store is a failure, open two days a week and by one of the most dishonest men in the area. Like his previous endeavors, this one will end with a building fire except DSC 7214 when he refused to pay the taxes and let the building go into disrepair. Krydor is a hopeless mess. Only outsiders could save this mistake.

....I have lived near Krydor all my life. The Kry in Krydor comes from my last name, Krysak , of which my great grand father Peter Krysak was one of the original settlers here. All the names posted in the replies , the old stores etc I remember or know of . Debbie Fee, you can look up Natalie Lewchuk, Natalie Kawulka, Victor Hupaelo in the Blaine lake or Hafford phone books and they can possibly help you out with Checknita family info. I know where the old yard is just north of town. My dad used to haul grain for them. There is Checknita family buried in our cemetary on the hill. Marko Shyluk , yup I remember buying fire crackers in your grandfathers store. Your mother is Leona , her brother Ken was behind me in Krydor school and I'd go to their little house to play on his hockey game sometime. Tony Shyluk had a 57 Studebaker Hawk, nice car. We are planning a 100 year celebration of the Greek Catholic church this coming June 13, 2010. This is Praznyk service , blessing of the graves at the cemetary on the hill, and 100 year celebration. Only a small handfull of us left here to do all this but we want honor and remember all the generations that helped build the church community here. I am looking for any pictures of the original St Demetrius church that was on the hill 1910 - 1947. If you have any pictures of that church please send me a copy so I can use in my history write up of the church. In 1947 the new church was built here in town and the 3 bells from the hill were brought down here. I'm the sec/ treasurer of the church and would appreciate any old pictures or stories you may have that I can use. Any donations always welcome to help upkeep the cemetary and church. Wow!! My name is Mark Shyluk, My grandfather Peter owned the hardware store, and my Grandpa Demitro (Dick) Michayluk was a school teacher at Krydor and 4 term MLA (CCF/NDP). I am looking for information on the Checknite family from Krydor Sask. Stefania Checknite went to Jack Pine Grove School 1945. There was a Sue, Debbie, Rose, Stefania and my Husband's mother Josephine Checknite, who passed away in 1978. Josephine Checknite was a student teacher and went to Edmonton (we assume to teach). She changed careers and became a nurse. She was a nurse during the second war where she met her husband William Hume Fee and settled in Linden, New Jersey. Please any information as I am planning a trip for my husband for his birthday to see where his mother grew up. Any information would be greatly appreciated as would hints to where I might find information, such as school records, addresses, etc.

Krydor will always hold a special place in my heart..I went to school there, we shopped at Joe Marynowski's store. I remember going into the store after school, hoping to catch a ride home with a neighbor. Joe would almost always give me an apple. On a couple of cold winter nights I spent the night with Joe and his daughter Rosie. I still visit Krydor almost yearly. My Dad and Mom, and my brother lived in Krydor after moving from the nearby farm. I still have a nephew living in Krydor. I remember the Worobetz's who owned the hotel, the Cisecki's who owned the confectionary store, the Dragons who owned the Red and White store, Shyluk who owned a hardware store, Owners of the other hardware store, Woytiuk who owned a grocery store, Ryhorski who owned a service station next to Marynowski's store, an egg candling shop, a livery barn, a skating rink, Marko's backsmith shop, Northway Motors, a dance hall, and of course the two room, brick school. Picture 7214 was owned by my grandfather, Joe Marynowski who emigrated from Poland. My mother grew up and went to school in this town. Losing 4 fingers on his right hand during a farming accident, he was forced to open the Krydor store as he could no longer work the farm. Business was always slow. Indeed my mother recognized her writing on the price tag that she made as a little girl. God bless him, he was selling the same clothing at the same price in 1967 as he was in 1929.

I find Krydor a beautiful and peaceful village. Far from a ghost town, it now has a grocery and second hand store. The Krydor General Store is a facinating place, and a great place to shop for real deals. Guest

There are Zypchyn's near/around Hafford as well... presently to this day. If this helps you any. I spent many times in Krydor growing up. I never found the place to be neither creepy nor freaky... it was very laid back and very much fun!! Too bad it's not like it used to be.

Ahhh Krydor!!!!!!This is the most sacred..and scariest place on earth.....haha I LOVE IT...Krydor is where my heart is!! It may not look like a place where fond memories could be made but Krydor definately had it's day...Baba and Gido still live here as so did I...2 1/2 miles south. My most precious memories are in this town ...and planning my wedding there in 09.....so to all those who don't know who, what or where Krydor is YOU ARE MISSING OUT !!!!! Gotta go...I am Krydorbound for Easter.....

me too,,,,,, used to go there to visit an uncle who was an elevator agent. i remember dad buying gas at the service station with a hand pump to fill the glass container. oil came in a glass jar with a metal spout. used to go to the meat market (dragan's?) across from the hotel.yup, lots of memories there, good thing we can keep them with us.

My grandparents,Helen and Andrew Worobetz owned the Krydor Hotel in the 30's and 40's.We visited Krydor last summer and were stunned at the desolation.We have many pictures of the town when it was thriving.It's very sad that there isn't much left of it.Wish we could afford to buy the hotel since it is now up for sale.

My grandfather immigrated here in 1911 from Stobnica, Poland and left for the U.S. in 1920. My father was born in Hafford in1919. I'm looking for any information on my family in Canada. The family name is Skwaryk, but I've seen variations in the spelling including Szerwy?. I had a half-uncle named Skwar who died in 1999. My grandmother's name is Zypchyn.
