Why Me?

Ok I should be packing my Long Glass.....for images just like this!!!
Do you know how close you can get to a Great Horned Owl with only a 24-70mm 2.8 Zoom?
I don't shoot wildlife but I do shoot Air Shows...so this should be easy....right?
Just keep telling yourself...pack that long glass you own that you only use twice a year.
Then buddy you will get that image, while this is still good it's not great, lucky all the other stuff is in there to add some interest.
One more thing the sun was behind him......shesh!!!!

Nikon D300 ,Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 AF-S ED IF G N
1/200s f/10.0 at 70.0mm iso200 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Doug, you are so right, IMHO! This one tells a story, where as a tight shot, not so much. Mike, I have a nice new camera bag the would be happy to look after your long lenses while you aren't using them :)

I'm going to agree with Doug on this lens issue but knowing how often you actually get to photograph wildlife this is one of those "darn it" moments!
PS Go for Saw-whet Owls - you can get really close to them :-)

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I very much like this shot of Mr. Owl. The short focal length means that you've got him absolutely in context. At the risk of being branded a heretic, I get a tad bored with endless tight shots of animals taken with long lenses; sure, they're technically amazing, but quite often lack soul - they tell me almost nothing of the creatures' habitat or natural surroundings, but plenty about the photographers ability. But I really like this - simple, contexted and natural. Nice one, Mike. V (right, I'm ready for my lynching now...)

Wow, he certainly blends in! It is a nice image and I know what you mean about having the long glass....never leave home without it!

Nope, neither you nor John are alone in this universe. In photography, as in most things, some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug. Start lugging that long glass.

I like it, nice composition. All in all, a mighty fine scene, Mike.
If you're not going to use that long glass, can I borrow it?
:O)

Been there! Done This! I know what you mean! I would say "welcome to my world" but apparently I am not alone in my parallel universe! LOL!
