Gouldtown Saskatchewan "Only The Wind Moves The Swings"

Gouldtown (pronounced "Goldtown") is only 20km's north of Herbert on Canada's #1 Highway. This once a busy community of over 200 had 3 gas stations 1 elevator and a church. The school was home to over 100 students and as the town faded so did the many shops.....the school was closed in the mid 80's. Two brothers (their father owned the BA gas station in the 50's) and one other resident that still live there cut & bale the grass and hay that now grows wild in town. There are not many visitors anymore to this town......Enjoy the images and your comments are most welcome...Mike

wondering if anyone along the way had ever heard of Oscar David and Emily Gould circa 1911 - 1921 in the Gouldtown area? He was a minister... as far as we know and he is maternal grandfather to my mother-in-law. Also, any information on George Enos and Gladys Emily White, same time frame. Thanks for any help

Intersesting to see the present day pictures of Gouldtown. Wondering if anyone has pictures of the past, such as elevators or railway. Was there one elevator or two? Gouldtown Cemetery is just North of the Gouldtown turnoff. The Sommerfeld Church used to be located there, but has since been moved to Doc's Town in Swift Current. The cemetery is still in use I believe. I was there in 2003.

Hello Folks. I was born a mile and a half south of Gouldtown back in 1928 in a farmhouse across the road from a Jantzen family, not very far from the Gerbrandts and the Stuckles. My mother, Helena Wiebe Funk, was born in the house where Justice of the Peace Rosett lived for many years. My father, Peter, Wiebe Epp, who had come from Manitoba, was the first postmaster. When the Post Office authorities offered him to name the town after himself, it was he who suggested naming it after the Gould family, the first settlers in the neighborhood. My memories are rather fuzzy because we moved to Vancouver in 1934. Two of my sisters graduated from grade 10 at a school to the southwest of us, far enough away for them to go there on horseback.

Lovely site, my grandparents use to live there, Abraham Wiebe and Maria ( Janzen) Wiebe. My dad and some of his brother where born there before the moved to Carrot River. I still have relatives that live in Herbert, Sask.

Hello;I'm one of the brothers that cuts and makes the hay (the way Mike refers to) My wife and I still live here(in Gouldtown)She(Meagans mom) still has the post office here. My brother has a Backhoe bussiness.Other than that theres not a lot happening here but life does goes on.Population is about 10 (not official)probiby that many cats and a dog.

Dear Mike. I,too,stumbled on to your website about Gouldtown Sask. I am now 85 years old but my memories are still vivid of the one year I spent in Gouldtown as the school teacher.This was 62 years ago during school year 1945-46 when I was 18 years old.Teachers were in short supply and after 6 weeks of normal school a one year permit was issued.In those days Gouldtown was predominantly Mennonite and I am Jewish.Needless to say it was quite a year.I boarded at Rosets and maintained contact with Wilfred untill his passing.If any of your contributers woul like to exchange memories,I would be pleased.

My grandparents are buried in Gouldtown Cemetery, which I visited in 2003. It is interesting to see the remaining buildings in Gouldtown. I would like to find out if anyone has pictures of the past, particularly of the elevator and the railway.

Came across this site while looking up my family tree, my grand fatre and his family where from here. His name was Abraham Zacharais Wiebe. My great grand fater is buried near by in Glen Kerr, his name was Jacob Wiebe. I also have relatives in nearby Herbert, Sask. They are related to Jacob Z Wiebe. Any extra information would be helpfull in my search for the family tree.By the way, my father's name is John Wiebe

My aunt and cousins lived in Beechy for many years and I heard stories of it while growing up. I determined to see it one day and finally did in 1994. While traveling to Beechy I had to stop in Gouldtown because of the name. Very interesting to see but a sense of sadness to see a once thriving area now abandoned. Really enjoyed seeing Canada and the so called prairie province

i remember going just to play in that play ground they had after they closed down my family would come vist relatives they lived close by and it just brings memories just being there childhood memories and my mother grew up at close by and went to this school i hope i got that right................. and that store at the end of that street very close to my grandma's house my grandpa would buy the 4 kids some chocolate bar and a small drink or something good memories it was like 1988 or 1989 something like that time fly's

Hi there, I grew up here and attended the school until Grade 8,when we were bussed to Herbert. I remember going to the store and finding a quarter on the road. I bought a coke and a chocolate bar for that quarter. I moved back here after I got married and raised my family here. Although we have made many changes, I now live in the house that I grew up in. My husband and I both work in Herbert but I enjoy the quietness of the country where you borrow from your neighbors if you run out of something and you stop and chat at the local post office.

Glen Goerzen I've been doing a little research on my family background on my mom's side. She grew up in the Herbert area. For a short while, around 1940, her parents George and Tina Cornelsen ran Cornelsen's store in Gouldtown. It's the building pictured on this website 5432&5442. I'm having trouble determining which years they owned the store and would appreciate any information on the topic.

Hi there, nice to see a website of Gouldtown. My parents met there and got married there. My Dad lived there from birth till death. I was there for 19 years of my life. I went to the school for grades 1 & 2, then they shut it down (there were only 2 classrooms and 2 teachers for all the students). I remember when the store was owned by the CO-OP. And everyone knew me by the way I drove and how loud my car was. Its nice to think back to when I lived there, issued didnt seem so big back there. And it was never thats stressful of a place to live.

The house#5440 was my grandmothers house Justena Driedger before this house was built she lived on the farm a few miles east of Gouldtown across the road from the quarter my grandfather Peter Driedger homesteaded.

Dear Mike; I stumbled onto your website and was very pleased to see the photos. The town has a special meaning to me as I was born very close to it. My grandfather (Derksen) homesteaded close to the town at the beginning of the 20th century and I was born on the homestead in 1939. My mother was brought up at the farmstead just across the road from the Sommerfelder Church, the Janzen homestead. I think the church shown in the photos is other than the Sommerfelder Church. That church was moved to the Mennonite Heritage Village in Swift Current. I visited Gouldtown in 2005. If you or any of your readers have any particular information on the town or environs going back to the last century, I would be interested in hearing from them.

Hello Mike. Great pictures! I actually took some really good shots this summer when I went home to visit ... I am from Gouldtown. My sister just sent me the link to your site. I asked her about it and she told me that you had spoken with my dad when you came through town (we own the BA sign now.) The school closed the year I started Kindergarten. We had our store for quite a while though and I remember mom giving us quarters to go buy candy. Was kinda nice having a little store at the end of your drive way smile. Glad you enjoyed your travels through this now small hamlet.
