On December 11th 2014, I went for a late afternoon dive at the airport fuel pier. The conditions were horrible. Lots of surge and bad visibility even down to 60 ft! There was an orange seahorse that had been in the same spot for many months at 25ft. At the beginning of the dive I went by that spot and saw the seahorse. Because of the bad conditions I decided to go deeper and concentrate on some macro photography of small blennies and gobies. After a while I started to head up back into the shallows and once again I went by the seahorse spot but he was no where in sight. I searched for a minute with no luck. All the while, the conditions kept getting worse, so I decided I would end my dive. I remembered seeing an octopus on a previous dive and headed up to 13 ft where I last saw it. It was getting dark so when I spotted the octopus I turned on my red light so I wouldn’t disturb it as much as using a white light does. It took me a minute to recognize that something was out of the ordinary! When I finally realized that the octopus had the orange seahorse gripped tightly in it’s grasp, I was shocked! I found out later that octopus will occasionally prey on seahorses but at the time I was ignorant of this fact and wasn’t sure if the seahorse had just accidently swam too close to the octopus’s lair or what the heck was going on! I turned my white light back on to see if it would disturb the octopus enough that it might let go of the seahorse but no to no avail. I finally tried to pry the seahorse out of the octopus’s grasp but that only made the octopus hold on even tighter. I had to resign myself to accept nature's course and I took a few photos...all the while being whipped back and forth in the heavy surge. It was a sad sight to see but also another amazing underwater learning experience.
