Pueo or Hawaiian Short eared owl

This rarely seen native owl has a prominent role
in Hawaiian mythology.
It is believed to be a strong omen when seen.

On the Big Island, we see them in certain spots regularly. They hang out on the fence posts on the Saddle Road (Between Hilo and Waikoloa - on the Waikoloa side. I also had a barn owl on my property recently.

Here are links - the first to 3 owl shots and then a composite of pueo's from the Saddles Road. They are really hard to get sharp.
