Other birders (unknown experience) observing this hawk called it a Broad-winged. I did much research before posting this photo. Unfortunately, one of the best sites that uses actual photo comparisons did not have a Ferruginous Hawk. Both of Cornell's websites do not mention any of the field marks brought into dispute nor do they mention that a Broad-winged can be confused with a Ferruginous hawk. I have done more research and can understand the reason for the dispute. This hawk did not appear as large as a Ferruginous Hawk, and it also has quite a bit of markings on the tail which I do not believe is consistent with a Ferruginous. However, in one photo it appears to have a ferruginous color on the shoulder. It also has quite long wings for a Broad-winged hawk. It is hard telling with juveniles. If you can help clarify this, please leave a comment.
Old subject that's been put to bed anyway I'm sure.....That tail is fine for a young Ferruginous, as is everything else about it. At a glance that would have been my first impression, just from the photos. That upperwing with the light primary panel, but not including the coverts, is exclusive to Ferrug and Rough-legged.
