The much-photographed Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest in the nation and a symbol of North Carolina. The lighthouse has warned sailors for over 100 years of the treacherous Diamond Shoals -- shallow sandbars -- which extend 14 miles out into the ocean. In 1999 they had to move the lighthouse inland as the ever-encroaching waves of the Atlantic threatened the structure!
