Bracket Fungi

Trametes versicolor (syn. Polystictus versicolor)

A medium-sized thin bracket fungus growing to about 6 cm across. This very common species is
found on dead wood and is easily recognised by its colourful zoned cap. Found in groups on
fallen logs, old tree stumps and rarely on the dead wood of living trees. Found in all
states of Australia.

This particular cluster is on a stump of a tree - a sad story - I grew this tree from seed
many years ago, it had a beautiful musky-pink bloom and attracted various parrots each year
when it flowered. Unfortunately the borers also took a liking to the tree and destroyed
the top giving it a nasty and dangerous lean, so we sadly cut it down. The fungi is
now finishing off what is left of it.
