The Ellis County courthouse was built of sandstone and granite in Romanesque Revival design in 1897. J. Riely Gordon was the architect and Otto Kroeger was the contractor who built it at a cost of $175,000. Three Italian Artisans carved features in to the sandstone helping to make it one of Texas finest courthouses.
