I like this one the best of the two Tom as the shallow DOF draws the eye to the curve better and blurs the distracting background. Nice warm tones and texture in the wood too. CJ

Nice, close, shallow DOF keeps the focus on the subject better. Like the texture of the wood showing.

This one is clearly a photo of the bannister. I am not sure what the next one is a photo of (i.e., the bannister, the stairs, the carpet, something else?). So I definitely prefer this version. Well done.
I think I like this one best too Tommy- great image. I expect we are going to see a lot of railings in this challenge, I have one in exhibition already and two more in mind to shoot for Eligible. Nether will have the potential for the warmth you have captured here though as both are metal. Maybe we can petition Kurt to change this to the "Railing" challenge LOL!

+1 to what Kurt said. Also, I like the details on the wood.

I agree wiv Kurt as this one we're forced to focus on the curve whereas the second one it's just a part of a scene. I also agree wiv Kurt that you have nice arse:-)
Thanks Angio. It's always a question of emphasis and I can't make up my mind. I tried intermediate apertures as well, but I agree with you. The smaller apertures flatten the image. This shows natural depth. -tv
Interesting shot, tv, and I think I prefer the tighter DOF with this version - it really focuses in on the curve of the bannister. Seeing detail in the downstairs carpet doesn't seem to add much to the composition, if anything it distracts. BTW, nice glass!
