DSC_6774 Yue and Yaozhou wares.jpg

The Yue kiln continued to produce celadon wares as a tribute ware in the early
stage of the Northern Song dynasty. These potters excelled in making vessels
with carved and incised decorations. A variety of motifs is represented: peonies,
lotus, phoenixes, butterflies and scenes of children at play. The Yue kilns
declined as more and more famous kilns arose during the middle of the northern
Song period.

Yaozhou ware was produced among kilns in northern China, centered in Huangbaozhen
in Tongchuan, Shaanxi province. It is noted for it's celadon wares, with a great variety of
shapes as wellas carved and stamped decorations. The carved designs, which feature
dexterity and control of the carving knife and a robust and lively style, are it's most
distinctive achievement. Subject matters include floral motifs, notably the peony, lotus
and chrysanthemum and also birds, fish and children at play. The Yaozhou kiln was
chosen to produce tribute ware during the northern Song dynasty because of it's fine
technical and artistic accomplishment.
