Her brother Bill joined the British Merchant Navy at age 17. Mom lived in London with her sister Norma and endured the terror-bombing by the Germans. Her younger siblings Clem and Thora were evacuated to the country. Her older sister, Alethea, became a military driver and was a colleague of General Eisenhower's driver, Kay Summersby.
