Walking Stick Insect

Tena Area

There were so many fascinating creatures to be found moving about the forest undergrowth in the jungles of Tena. This large walking stick was fun to watch. It moves in a jerky, twitchy manner, simulating the look of a twig or leaf being lightly blown by a gentle breeze. They have even adapted their behavior and movement to appear more like vegetation and less like an edible prey item for the many insectivorous species of birds and other animals in the forest. There were so many fascinating adaptations on display. It seems that every new creature we encountered had itself its own niche to fill in the diversity of species and habitats of this fabulous area.
