The ancient Roman city of Dougga lies a couple hours drive south-west of Tunis. We spent a couple hours exploring the ruins of the city and only came across about 10 other tourists the entire time. It was like having the city to ourselves.
As you look at the Capitol building, while not really visible in this picture, to the left was the Forum and to the right was the Temple of Mercury. About 5,000 people lived in Dougga at its hight with another 5,000 in the surrounding area. While the city center continues to be excavated, much, much more remains to be discovered under the private land surrounding the area which currently produces some of the most prolific olive groves, and the property owners aren't willing to give up their land.
