"I knew the wooly mammoth"

The muskox thrived in the Pleistocene, making it a contemporary of the wooly mammoth. The last of the mammoths died out on Wrangel Island about 3000 years ago. When Lewis and Clark made their famous trek west they were instructed to keep an eye out for mammoth, as there were rumors of the giant beasts still roaming the wilderness.
