Like with the Chinese Sanxian and the Japanese Shamisen, the Thinh knows no frets and makes sliding very easy. It is commonly tuned in a fifth or fourth and the deeper chord is sometimes used as a drone. Several Persian and middle eastern lutes remind of lutes like this, for example the Turkish Saz.

Ahnlich anderer Langhalslauten wie die chinesische Sanxian oder die japanische Shamisen, und auch arabischer Lauten wie der türkischen Saz oder der Tar gibt es hier keine Bünde, so daß man auf dem Hals die Tonhöhe gleitend verändern kann. Dabei wird die tiefere Saite als Bordun genutzt.
