A Buddha statue on the large chedi looks out over Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon. This temples huge ("yai") chedi is visible from most of the town. The monastery was built by King U-thong. The present name of the temple was given by King Naresuan to commemorate a battle fought on elephant-back against the Crown Prince of Burma in 1592, which brought independence to Ayutthaya after 15 years.
