April 28, 2008 - An Unexpected Find

Rain today and cool, with highs in the 60's. My son, daughter-in-law, and I went hiking yesterday to see if the yellow ladyslippers were blooming. They were up but not blooming yet, but I nearly stepped on this little guy as we were walking down an old haul road. As you can see, he wasn't very happy with us disturbing him. It isn't the best photo, but it was as close as I wanted to get to him (the photo has been cropped).

Canon EOS 350D ,Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
1/160s f/3.5 at 100.0mm iso100 full exif

From the shape of its head it doesn't appear dangerous (easy for me to say sitting here!), but I think you should be complimented on the lack of camera shake! It's a great shot.

Actually it's a great photo...given the circumstances. You managed to capture this guy very well!

Yikes, I would have probably pulled a hamstring leaping a different direction, I just love snakes.... :) v.

Very nice Rich! I recognize this little one! I'm pretty sure this is a common Bull Snake and harmless. They get their protection by imitating a rattlesnake by hitting their tails against the leaves. -BJ
