Its hard to get this close to a Hooded Merganser in the wild, but it can be done in the winter when most bodies of water are frozen by going to the outlet of the water treatment plant in Fort Collins. They are still rather skiddish and will fly at the drop of a hat or any sudden move, but viewing them from a vehicle tends to keep them more at ease.
