Most cottentails have a stub tail with a white underside that shows when they are retreating, giving them their name "cottontails." The Desert Cottontail is found throughout the central United States from eastern Montana to western Texas, and in northern Mexico. Westwards its range extends to central Nevada and southern California and Baja California. The Eastern Cottontail can be found in meadows and shrubby areas in the eastern and southwestern United States, southern Canada, eastern Mexico, Central America and northernmost South America.
