In 1946, shortly after the end of World War II when gas once again became available, Gilbert and Viola took Gilbert's parents, Sam and Mary Johnson on an extensive trip to the North East. They visited New York, Washington DC, Massachusetts, Niagara Falls and other areas. Part of the trip allowed them to spend time with Sam's sister, Julia Shuttleworth who lived in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
