Street sweepers, Cochin, India, 2008

The streets of Cochin are cleaner and more orderly than those we saw in Northern India. Cochin’s European roots are part of the reason. I juxtapose two sweepers here – making one larger than the other to add perspective the scene. I liked the textures the brooms have left in the dust. The two sweepers work at the problem from opposite ends of the square, and only a delicate of band of floral droppings remains in their sights.

You are right, Tim -- our images share much in common...the overhead view, abstracted figures, and a degree of scale incongruity, and of course, the subject matter itself. I like the sense of motion here as well -- the impressions of the broom left in the dust, and the circular pattern of the bricks, seem to put this image into motion. Ultimately, however, it is the color that is the decisive factor here. It is a color that seems more at home in a party dress than on a street sweeper.

I like the color here, especially the light blue and the yellow of the flowers. and the way that there seems to be motion in the foreground. This reminds me of an image I made in Ping Yao: http://www.pbase.com/mityam/image/93683030 .
