Dawn in the village, Khajuraho, India, 2008

A rising sun is echoed in the design of an ornamental gate in the village of Khajuraho. The light clouds add important texture to the background as well.

Expressive photography brings a constant flow of "what ifs," Jenene. There are so many variables to consider. I tried a number of framing options in this image -- making very small shifts. I am not jumping around changing vantage points here. Instead, I made a number of subtle adjustments until I got exactly what I wanted. That is one of the great gifts of digital imaging. It lets us see how an option will work, instantly. We can make as many versions as we want, at no extra cost. And then we can choose the one that works the best for our purposes.

I agree - the sun just off to the side creates drama and tension at the same time - I don't think any further away would have worked as successfully, however. The delicacy of the gates against the softness of the clouds is quite striking.

I had the same feeling when I looked at this image later on my computer. If only I had moved a bit to the right, I could have superimposed the sun upon the stylized design of the sun on the gate. Yet the more I look at this version, the more I like it the way i made it. The sun placed right behind the metal sun would have looked gimmicky, I think.

My first wish was that the sun was exactly behind the design, but now I like the anticipation the interplay provides.
