Village street, Khajuraho, India, 2008

I use negative space here to create tension between the two children. They are each looking in the same direction, but do not seem to notice each other. The silhouette of the young girl at left is echoed by the vertical post, as well as the window and door on the opposite wall. The young man sitting on the step wears a red shirt, which ties him to the large Coca-Cola ad on the wall. The entire image is pulled together by the shadowy dirt street itself –- it is linked to everything in the image.

I am not sure which repeated diagonal you mean, however I deliberately included the large rock at the bottom of the left hand corner to anchor the image and provide a counterweight to the massive Coca Cola sign at the top right corner.

the diagonal in the "C" underline which is repeated in the bottom left corner...

There are number of unifying features at work here, Tim -- as you note, the children, both wearing red, are linked by color to the Coca-Cola sign. Note how the diagonal slash of the Coca-Cola flourish leads right, while the little girl's hand and boy's head position, lead left. There is, as you say, a relationship between two cultures here: east meets west in the village square at Khajuraho.

Before I comment on detail, let me say that I am really drawn to the image and I feel it is because of the interaction of the coca cola sign and the culture. The image is also unified by the reds and the diagonal of the coca cola lettering leads us into the image.
