Pilgrim, Varanasi, India, 2008

Bearing a red flag, a bearded religious pilgrim completes an arduous trip on foot here in Varanasi. There is an intense atmosphere of spiritual devotion in this city, which sits on the banks of India's most sacred river, the Ganges. The city is the religious center of the world for Hindus. In this image, religious devotion seems to fall naturally into place with everyday life. Nobody gives the pilgrim a second look as he walks past. Meanwhile, the pilgrim appears as if he is momentarily waiting for us to join him on his walk.

The fragment of the bike wheel in the lower left hand corner adds a layer to the image creating depth perspective -- it does indeed help thrust you into the image and make you feel as if you are actually there with me. Thanks for making this observation, Vera.

It is interesting how the bike in the far left hand corner adds to this picture for me. For some reason it helps me feel as if I am there with you rather than simply viewing a photo.

I made many street shots in Varanasi filled with hustle and bustle. This one of the most expressive because it has an incongruous focal point -- the pilgrim with the flag.

The hustle and bustle of Varanasi, this image sure brings that back
