This is only the ninth time since the Spillway was built in 1931 that it has been opened. It diverts water from the swollen Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Borgne to prevent flooding in the City of New Orleans.
The diversion of River water also relieves the pressure on levees upriver.
