DIY Light Kit - Portrait 1
by Josh Hed

I found an article online the other day about making your own lighting kit. I had most of what I needed so I decided to give it a try.

http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/hp_cameras_equipment/article/0,2033,DIY_13955_2649651,00.html

I only used two lights (key and fill) rather than the standard three or four. I also used the ceiling light which sort of acted like a background light.

I would like to know what you think of the lighting in the following pictures. Please disregard the backdrop as I used what I had laying around.
Also disregard my poor kids' clothes, hair and poses. They were recruited at the last minute for this little test and didn't have any time to prep. :)

I've never tried to light a scene before and am wondering how I did. Any pointers you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Great expresion & like the cute head tilt. I'd like to see the catch light in her eyes at more of an angle such as 11 & 3 oclock instead of 2 & 8 as they look more like snake bits.

Thanks for the comments. The shadow on her left arm is from her sister. This photo was originally of the two of them. Her sister was making a funny face and also had some motion blur so I decided to Photoshop her out. I tried removing the shadow on the left arm but was unable to make it look natural, so I left it alone.

I don't think there's anything to disregard here Josh, these photos look great. The lighting looks very natural and balanced. The only distraction I see in this one is the shadow on her left shoulder, but the lighting effect overall is great.

Josh, I love the photos - the lighting looks good to me. I love the natural look of the children, hair and clothes. Your girls are adorable.
