Most visitors to Yellowstone never see a wolf; let alone a pack of wolves.
This is six members of the Druid pack seen high on a distant mountain side.
Since the photo was shot with "Big Bertha" http://www.pbase.com/britestar/image/56129079 and a 2x tele extender, yes, the wolves really are as far away as they seem. Nevertheless, having many of the pack together like this at one time is a still a sight to give delight to "Wolf Groupies".
Generally, when wolves are spotted, this is the "far away" view that most people see.
Still, being able to see many wolves together - even through a spotting scope - is definitely a true prize sighting for those average visitors who come to Yellowstone in hopes of getting just a quick glimpse of even a single wild wolf.
The first wild wolf I ever saw (in Denali) was even smaller than these, but that left me with "wolf fever". There is something magical about these wild creatures - even when seen far, far away. Yes, I got closer shots during my Winter trip to Yellowstone, but this tells the story of Yellowstone. Unfortunately, most Yellowstone visitors are not fortunate enough to view this many wolves together in the wild - not even in the distance. Those who do are the lucky ones.
