Tsu-jō 津城

Tsu, Mie-ken, Japan view map

Built by Oda Nobukane, younger brother of Oda Nobunaga, in 1580, the original Tsu Castle was rather short-lived, succumbing to fire in a 1608 battle. The five-storey donjon was never restored, but a pair of three-storey towers were rebuilt as part of a rejuvenation of the castle town in the Edo period. The whole of the structures were dismantled upon the Meiji Restoration, with only the foundations left standing. The pictured tower was rebuilt in a conversion of the site to a historic city park in 1958.
