This is my first shot of the inner gorge. It is also a rather unspectacular picture of the Cremation Graben. The titled band is what I think the author says is Hakatai Shale. Largely missing in most of the Grand Canyon, here it is preserved by being buried in an area of rifting and titling. If I understand the book correctly there is still a missing 550 million years of rock here, much more elsewhere. I forgot to look for this "grave" on the other side of the river.

You can see the trail traverses across the top of this band, to a point below the rocky top where I would take my final break.
