The rest area is the flat area in the lower left, you can see the bathrooms with solar panels just to the left of the rocks in front of the picture. You can barely make out the trail as it traverses and drops to the lower middle of the ridge, where it goes behind the ridge (from this vantage point) until you see it switch back down the far part of the light colored part of the ridge. Just above those switch backs is skeleton point at mile 3.5.
There is a fossil display at the rest stop, still worth the side trip, despite the vandalism. Just after the rest stop you cross into the Supai Group, which according to the Hiking the Grand Canyon's Gelogy book contains both marine and land fossils, indicating it alertnated between land(mudstone) and sea (sandstone).
