My great grandfather, Colonel John Frederick Boyd, served in the Gordon Highlanders and was stationed in Karachi, India (now Pakistan), when my grandfather was born on April 28, 1871. My grandfather was the only one from his family to immigrate to America, around 1896. According to my aunts he traveled through and lived in the southern tier of New York from his arrival until the turn of the century and then moved to the mid-west because he thought it to be a more desirable area to live.

After marrying my grandmother in 1909, they lived on several different Indian reservations where my grandmother taught school. My dad was born in Mandan, North Dakota in 1912, my aunt Beatrice was born in Braddyville, Iowa in 1914 and my aunt Norma was born in Albert City, Iowa in 1918.

In 1924 the family moved to Ohio, Illinois, a small town about 100 miles west of Chicago. They ran the local newspaper, "The Ohio Herald", starting in 1924. After my grandfather's death in 1937 my grandmother, and dad published the newspaper with help from Beatrice and Norma when they weren't in college. When World War II broke out my dad joined the U. S. Coast Guard and Norma joined the U. S. Marine Corps so the newspaper was shut down forever.

The bottom of the obituary is torn off but it appears that my grandfather was buried in Stevens Cemetery, Lee County, Illinois, 6.8 miles north of the Marathon gas station on Main Street in Ohio on State Road 26 in an area formerly known as Stevensville.
