Every year in March we experience the Herring spawn. For a few weeks thousands of Herring spawn in the waters off the East Coast of Vancouver Island. The Herring fishery is open for a few short weeks. Today off the waterfront the fleet started its fishing. Boats of all sizes come to make lots of money for a short time. The short open season is closely controlled by the Fisheries Dept. and a quota for each boat. Along with the fishing boats come thousand of sea birds and eagles all feeding on the Herring roe. What a wonderful once a year sight.
