After the shelling

The chetnicks dropped mortar rounds onto the square and the fountain was damaged, although it still worked. One day I was nearby when a particularly heavy shelling of the area started. I found an open hausdor and took shelter. Somebody in one of the apartments saw me and invited me in. There was a family calmly waiting out the bombardment. I started a conversation with the grandmother, who appeared to be in her early 90s. There were some old photographs on the nearby shelf and I noticed one exquisite photo of a very beautiful young woman. She saw me admiring it and explained that a very good portrait photographer had lived in Dubrovnik back then, around 1918, but he moved to Vienna and was very successful there. "It's a wonderful portrait, and what a beautiful woman!" I said. "Thank you," she replied.
