Asahi Pentax S1a

One of my favorite cameras. Solid but small, with the M42 screw mount, and a range
of Super-Takumar lenses "to die for". I bought my S1a in 1961 to replace the Practica IV.
What a relief to get an instant return mirror, and automatic stop-down lenses instead
of pre-sets. This model was actually the fifth in the series - S S2 S1 and S3 then S1a.
They were all runaway best sellers for the era in Japanese brands. When Pentax decided
to make a less expensive version than the S3, they opted against retooling. Instead, they
removed the 1/1000 off the shutter speed dial, and launched the S3 as the S1a. Of course,
all I needed to do was turn the dial the extra click for 1/1000, because they didn't change
the shutter, just the dial face. This camera has a f2 55mm Super-Takumar coated lens. The
28mm f3.5 is also a gem. In the 'hold me feel me' category, I rate this up there with the M3.
(The North American version of this camera was a Honeywell Pentax.)

I like this camera, I have a Spotmatic from my late father cameras collection, he loved to use this camera and the Takumar lenses and still continue to use is with her lenses that are very good even in low light situations. Solid camera, very famous during the 70s and still able to perform her job very very well.

Pentax cameras have always been very smooth and adorable to use !
My first camera was a K1000 and I'm still missing it !
What I liked most in Pentax cameras was the sound of
their mechanical shutter,a sound that I never found
in any other camera.

So, which camera in your collection had the privilege of capturing this fine shot? :)

What, what ? I thought my Pentax was in the wardrobe. Hang on a minute ... whew! Yes, still there safe and sound, but mine is an S1, complete with the handy clip-on light meter! Now that I have it back in my hands, I shall have to see if it still does the business.

That is one solid camera. Quite large aperture lenses as well. You can use them in low light situations without any problems. You know, f2 lenses are something we need in Scandinavia, long winters, short days. Pentax are on the move on the digital front these days. I tried the new K10D camera and the build quality was extremely good. Much better than similar priced Canon cameraes.
