Taken from the Bailey Bridge that spans the River Blyth at the western end of the harbour, this shows an abandoned wind pump by the side of the river. There are marshes on either side of the river, which are used as grazing land and are drained by a network of ditches. As the marshes are very close to sea level, if not slightly below, the water has to be pumped up from the ditches and discharged into the river. This task has now been taken over by electric pumps, and the sails have been removed from the wind pumps formerly used for thispurpose, and only the towers remain.
