Note lack of wedding band on the slim Margaret Cusack. I wonder if
this photo was taken prior to her marriage. She is the mother of
George, David, Robert and Walter. She died in Oct 1918 at the height of
the influenza academic and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in
Arlington, MA. Her husband, Robert Mackie, died in 1920 from the
afteraffects of the flu. This was not an uncommon fate for survivors
of the 1918 flu. Weakened by the particularly severe 1918 flu strain,
they were susceptible to opportunistic illnesses.
