Definitely fruit! The prickly pears are sweet and eaten as fresh fruit or pressed for their juice. Isn't it marvelous to see Nature's clever design of the cactus? It's narrow paddles are strong but very economical. Lots of surface area for protective spines, but minimal flesh within to use moisture. Only the pears will attract animals to consume them---and in so doing, spread the precious seeds.
