Palo Verde (Cercidium floridum)

Borrego Valley

The palo verde (meaning "green stick") is a small tree which is common along washes. Its green bark can photosynthesize when the tree is leafless during the dry season. Bright yellow flowers are produced in the spring. Bipinnate leaves and elongate seed pods are also characteristic of this member of the bean family.
