Duality #36

I was reminded of scissors the first time I saw this Aloe Vera plant in my friends' San Diego neighborhood last March. So why didn't it occur to me until tonight (Thursday) to photograph scissors so I could create a duality? Minds are such funny things. They only make connections in their own sweet time. Especially creative connections. I guess there's no rushing the process.

Speaking of creativity, how do the non-photographic folks in your life respond to your absorption/obsession with photography? Do they get it at all? What I mean is, do they appreciate your artistic eye, your originality, your creativity? Or are they apathetic, jealous, dismissive or even downright negative about the subject? When you're out together and you see something you want to photograph, how do they react when you whip out your camera? Are there groans, as in, "Oh no, here s/he goes again!", or do they patiently wait while you do your thing? Afterwards, are they interested in seeing your photos either online or in print? Can you discuss photography together or is it a verboten subject?

For some PBasers this community is the only place where they can fully express their feelings about their craft. For here we know we are among persons who DO get it, who encourage us in our growth, who share our enthusiasm, who love discussing all things photographic. Others may refer to PBase as a "virtual" community but we know differently. The friendships we make here are every bit as real as those with people we can see, hear and touch. Ask anyone who has attended a PBase meetup. They know. Many of the friends we make here will be with us for life. How fortunate we are to have found PBase, and through PBase, to have found one another.

Wow1 I needed to hear this. I'm one who has to have people look at my stuff.
I have won out my family and friends.Even got a few family members interested in shooting, butI think I overwhelm them with it.
Pbase has been great for me especially the friends I am making.
Oh yeah,I get your shot and love it!!

Hi Patricia,
What a clever and interesting picture! Well thought out and excellent put together. \/

Love the duality.

As to your question it depends. My artistic friends are very supportive while those not particularly creative or artistic are dismissive. The latter are of course the same folks who have never partaken of the pleasure of an art museum... (Too bad for them!) Photography of course brings into sharp focus things most people take for granted, overlook--or sometimes prefer not to see at all... :-)

I doubt many great artists of any genre were much appreciated by their contemporaries...

This is a great one, the time it takes to put these together is mind blowing...v

yes, minds are very funny....but i learned to totally trust, the "right" moment...season for everything type of philosophy.....:)

i am a very lucky person, because my partner is as obsessed as i am - we are the perfect couple in that regard, our greatest pleasure is leisurely roaming for hours - his work is at -http://pbase.com/evaristo - we wouldn't dream to leave the house without the camera....yes, among the friends lots of eye rolling, impatience at outings, some
jealousy, some of my best friends have never even seen my galleries, no time, no interest...others cant understand why i don't go out more, thinking that you press a button in photoshop and get instant result....always love that one...big smile....have two friends who appreciate my expressions....so, its the same here....pbase is my sanctuary and i love my virtual worldwide family....thank you all, big virtual hugs and blessings:))))))

hmmm....since I have started reading your messages and those from Phil, I have actually gone to the library to borrow books on photography. I now have one "Photography Speaks, 150 Photographers On Their Art." Last night as I read through, for some I thought..."I don't get what they are say." But for others, it was as if they were reading my mind. My husband looked over, glanced at my book, turned his back, and while turning off the light said, "BORING!" He does not get it, but he tries his best to support my habit.

And your photo today. You are so right now that I see it. The plant looks like pinking scissors...I think that is what they are called. Have a great weekend.

Both great shots. Beautiful tone and texture and light and great focus in the scissors shot.

Im lucky in that my girlfriend, friends and family have much more faith in me than I do myself. Its their encouragement that keeps me going, especially Amy :o)

The pulls on the life of a pbaser are worth considering. It's tricky to find the "medea aurea" of a good balance between obsession and interested dedication.Patience in others is vital to us, and a first plank on the support bridge between our interest and their lack of involvement. But the pbase community is vital to the development and growth of our skills, and our understanding of what we see, create, record, critique. More food for thought today Patricia!
