Termed 'reticulation', the texture on this coin is caused by changes in the structure of the coin since it was made long ago. The pattern is distinctive to the age and purity making its presence a good sign of the coin being genuine. While modern 'reticulated' jewelry is produced, the pattern in different from that taking hundreds of years to form.
