Lories and lories of karumbu, sugarcane are brought to the city. The fields are already bought by dealers long before from the owner.

With Pongal every house needs karumbu to welcome the guest in their home with this festival of the harvest. Many houses put even the karumbu at their door. A typical Tamil festival even more celebrated here then Diwali, the festival of light.

But this year a dark cloud hangs over the festival , some Newspapers call it “Black Pongal” as Tamil Nadu lost a bit of it's identity by the ban of the Jallikattu, the celebration of the Bull, a game existent for centuries where a young brave man try to show his courage in taming the bull applying for the hand of his future wife.

Rural tradition torn down by a group opposing to animal abuse while a few days back people were killed in the name of God by Hindu-extrimists in Orissa and the daily traffic counts more victims then casualties on one day Jaliikattu but this seems of less importance here ... ?
