Preston - Jan 2008

There is a prison on the ground floor and many interesting and informative displays elsewhere, including a particularly interesting Flodden Room.

High up in the tower a water tank was installed to provide water for the nearby inhabitants.

This may be a really dumb question, or maybe an 'American' question, but what is a Flodden room? This one being a "particularly interesting Flodden Room" I have to ask. I thought I knew every castle in England and Scotland! Boy, I know nothing! I've never heard of Langley, Brancepeth, Bellister, Bywell, Harbottle, Bowes, Aydon, Hydon, Chipchase, Witton, Corbridge, or Bew! Where have I been? Where have these castles been? Most are still standing like the day they were built not a small pile of stone grown over with grass and bushes!!! They are beautiful! You are so lucky to live in such a fantastic country! I live in Las Vegas, the only thing old here are the little old ladies playing the penny slots downtown! I especially love reading the histories you've written about the castles and the people who lived in them! Arundel is the picture perfect (or at least MY idea of a picture perfect) castle! But so is Bamburgh, Warkworth, Alnwick, Tower of London, god too many to mention! I love really old castles, but the really old castles that are still standing! I cannot get too excited over ruins, I guess because I cannot picture nor appreciate what it once was. What I don't understand is how these beautiful castles get so ruined? When anything is left abandoned here (or just an nice green vacant never been lived on lot), there is someone or several someones ready to crawl in behind you and start squatting rights! This is the best gallery by far I have seen on pbase or anywhere, for that matter, with castle pictures! Thank you! I hope someday I will be able to visit, until then I need to read about these 'new' (to me) castles!!! Thanks Jim!
