The Ben (1993)

This might have been 1992, but it was on the Ben. I think this is part way up No.4 Gully. The weather got worse till we were swimming through a near vertical wall of poweder. Foolishly we hadn't roped up on the easier ground and failed 20 yards short of the cornice. We had to cut a belay, rope up and cme back down. I still think we were lucky to get off the hill alive. To make matters worse I was using a collection of Dad's old 70's equipment. A walking axe and a short ice hammer.

Oh I don't know. The snow was awful and it was like treading water just to stay still. I didn't fancy the cornice with no decent protection, so I think we made the right decision. Perhaps we should give it another try if we ever get some decent snow?

Yup - it was that day. I think if I'd had a decent pair of axes we wold have been as well to follow him up. It still annoys me now that we failed so close to the op.

Was this also the day that "Mad B*****d" (as we subsequently christened him) passed us and them dumped half a ton snow on us?
