We often use the expression "That's apples and oranges!". We do so disparagingly, when someone argues that two thing are the same, which we believe are different. Sometimes, we thoughtlessly apply this thinking to reject people who are in some way different from ourselves. They may be a different race, sex, age, or have a different sexual orientation, social status or religion-whatever! But apples and oranges have much in common. They are both fruit, grow on trees, have seeds, taste good and provide nourishment. They are also different from each other, but aren't we all better off that our world has both apples AND oranges.
