Life has thrown me quite a few curves the last few years. To be
honest, there's been more valleys than peaks (if I can mix a
metaphor). Divorce, the loss of a business, the loss of my own
home, having to put my dog down, the loss of most of my assets,
these are but a few transitions I've been through.

But I'm still here, and today, this palm tree, bending in the
howling winds of a terrible storm, reminds me of what I'm
grateful for today -- my resilience. Many times I've been at
that point where I wonder what's the use -- but each time,
I've put one foot in front of the other and taken things a day at a time.

I'm grateful for my inner strength, my refusal to give up.
I'm grateful for a new year, filled with possibilities.
I'm grateful for new beginnings.

This is a gorgeous abstraction! Nicely seen!
Adversity makes us stronger ... and more appreciative.

Wow, Gary! I had no idea of the extent of your challenges. You are an inspiration to us all with our own ups and downs! Superb metaphor!

Gary, your inner strenght and attitude is the point for a new beginning. I so much appreciate and admire your daily photos and lines which tell us something important and make us smile or laugh or cry. You have become a part of our lives, even though we've never met I feel as I knew you for years.
This is for all of us to stop and think that what we have now is not given us fos granted.
Thank you for this important reminder.

Your first paragraph describes my life circa 1990-95, except I never had a dog.
My government job was all I had left. But that was enough to rebuild.
I whole-heartedly agree with you... Attitude Is Everything!!

Yes Gary, that is what I admire about you. You have been amazing. And how you look more like that palm tree every day.

Way to bend with the wind, Gary. Despite your troubles, many of your photos show that you still have your sense of humor. I love that. Best of luck in this new year, sir.
As for this photo, I really like the graininess. It adds to the sense of turmoil of the storm.

Thanks Gary for starting my day off with tears in my eyes. What you wrote touched me because over the last year and a half my life has very much paralleled yours. As I see the trees bending and swaying from rain and wind today, I will also be reminded of my inner strength and also just as how God holds that palm tree up, He also holds us up. Thank you for all the really wonderful pictures you post, your lovely sense of humor, and how each day you bring smiles to so many people here on pbase.
