I did a search in dpreview and found one of the threads where Bob posted how close he get to the hummers, and one shot similar to this...

Yes the on board flash on the UZI was used as a fill flash.
I was about 3 feet from him and no window... just standing there out in the open.
They will get used to a person pretty quickly and they .. at least here... come in for the last drink of the evening about sunset time. I have taken flash pictures of them when it is too dark to see through the viewfinder.

This is amazing!!!

I'm assuming a flash was used, since otherwise the bird would've been silhouetted against the sky, right? Was it also done with a zoom lens, and through a window?

Yes that is for real.... 100% real....not photoshopped.....
I was trying to get something different to go with our great sunsets and started playing with the hummingbirds. I also didnt want the feeder in the picture and noticed their approach pattern and would take the picture when they were almost hovering before the last step to the feeder.
