world's most dangerous road*

This superlative might actually be true. El Camino de la Muerte is a 70km stretch from La Paz to a beautiful mountain town called Coroico, the gateway to Bolivia's Amazon region. It is estimated that over 300 people die every year on this road, and after driving on it, it's obvious why. The road is heavily traveled by rickety, overloaded trucks, many with bad brakes, bald tires, and a couple of families sitting atop the mounds of cargo. Many sections are barely a lane wide and there are no guardrails, only a crumbling mix of rocks and dirt that gives way to sheer 200 meter drops. Traffic runs day and night; fog and thick dust complicate matters. When it rains, things go from bad to worse. The road has become a popular mountain biking destination in recent years, but these thrill seekers are not immune from the hazards either - more than a dozen have gone sailing over the edge. Nonetheless, it is a very fun ride. The road has attracted international attention and both domestic and outside funding for a new road, but it is joked that this money has bought enough helicopters for Bolivian politicians for them to start ferrying goods by air to Coroico.
