This is an industrial city of about one million people, the third largest in Siberia. Most of the main cities along the Siberian railway are fairly good size, and most are quite nice, including this one. There is a large hydro dam on the Yenisey river, and to allow navigation a unique system of giant bathtub elevators carries ships up and down the dam. I was quite disappointed to learn that this elevator system was not operating while I was there because the river had already started to ice up.
